I have lived in Newton Abbot for the last 13 years. I have worked part-time as a ward nurse at Torbay hospital for the past ten years. I recently completed a degree with the Open University in Sociology and Social Psychology and am currently taking a Masters in Social  Research Methods.

I am the mother of three teenage sons who have all been home educated but who are now at University, Sixth Form College and school. I have been  involved in community education groups and has supported new mothers as a counsellor for La Leche League, a breast-feeding charity.

I re-joined the Green Party about two years ago, because not only do their aims and sentiments over social justice and environmental concern align with mine, I saw, under the leadership of Caroline Lucas, a party ready for business. Since joining I have stood in the County Council Elections last June and in May in the General Election for the Teignbridge Constituency. I am currently the Local Policies Officer for South Devon Green Party.

I am passionate about the need to create a fairer society in which all have a chance  to thrive. I firmly believe that being  human necessitates far more than simply to experience life as work,  struggle to make ends meet and the endless consumption of stuff. Everyone is entitled to experience  joy, the satisfaction of doing what they really want to do, and pleasure involved in putting to good use their  unique talents and qualities.

This is idealistic thinking in a world were so many simply wake each day and get on with the business of what has to be done. But for me, the human spirit is stronger than the rules we create in a society which more often than not are designed to serve the needs of  the powerful few; I wish to be part of change.

Before we know it the District Council Elections will be upon us and the Green Party will be building on its recent success of first Green MP nationally, and first Devon County Councillor locally. For information about the District Council Elections, and for offers of help and support please get in touch. In addition I would like to get your feedback. Thank you also for all the kind support  I have received in the past, it is much appreciated…

A little background

I trained as a nurse at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. After working for two years post qualifying, I went to Leeds University to study Ecology. I then became a mother and home educated my three children. During this time I returned to nursing via a back to nursing course which led to my current job at Torbay hospital. At the same time I started my undergraduate degree by distance learning with the Open University. I am half way through my Masters degree. I re-joined the Green Party nearly two years ago, now convinced of their viability as a political force.

A word on Politicians

Of course there are many decent politicians who are hard-working , honourable and are ‘in it’ for the public good. Unfortunately it’s the ones who don’t live up to this that make the news, they have tarnished the name and institution of politics. The cynicism and mistrust of politics and politicians remain and in addition with so much talk of cuts, doom and gloom people are expressing real fears. The Green Party is a grass-roots organisation. The people involved are there because they are passionate about the ideas and issues the Green Party represents. We want to introduce a positive way of doing politics which is based on honesty and integrity, and returns politics to its original purpose of serving the people and creating a decent society in which we can all thrive.
